How Body Composition Has Been Measured — and Why It's Often a Hassle

For years, the gold standard was hydrostatic weighing — full submersion in a water tank while attempting to fully exhale, followed by calculations. Accurate? Reasonably. Comfortable? Not remotely. Other methods include skinfold calipers (awkward and operator-dependent), bioelectrical impedance devices (affected by hydration and inconsistent), DEXA scans (expensive and facility-dependent), and 3D body scans.

Ultrasound Body Composition Technology at RDF

Our coaches use the BodyMetrix ultrasound system — a non-invasive, highly accurate method that takes only a few minutes and is completely unaffected by hydration status, recent exercise, or caffeine intake. Here's how it works:

An ultrasound signal is transmitted through tissue. Strong reflections occur at the boundaries between different tissue types — fat to muscle, muscle to bone. By timing how long the signal takes to return, the system calculates precise tissue layer thicknesses at each measurement site. The result is a reliable, repeatable body composition reading without any discomfort, claustrophobia, or awkward positioning.

When we know your actual fat-free mass versus fat mass with precision, we can build nutrition and training recommendations that are calibrated to your body — not generic targets.
